Yeah, it’s a mouthful. And the pictures don’t make it any more pleasing. Apparently, Pong was not the first game as I originally thought. You probably did too. But did you ever think a game could get any more basic than that?

According to the history on, if you consider a video game to be “any electronic game displayed using a video output device” then this would be considered the first. That’s the reason my post has a “?” It’s based on World War II displays, and players would use knobs to adjust the trajectory of light beams, (the missiles), in an attempt to hit targets printed on clear screen overlays.

Physicists Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr. and Estle Ray Mann came up with this idea, and by 1947, they submitted a patent for the device, a first for an electronic game. It was never released to the marketplace and no working model exists today. Bummer!

If you are truly into physics, you would know what I mean when I say that you connect a cathode ray tube (creates electronic signal) to an oscilloscope (displays electronic signal via rays of light on a monitor) and use knobs to control the angle of light traces displayed. Apparently, they were able to create a simulation of an explosion on target using a sliding contractor. Since the game doesn’t exist, I can’t show it to you. This might help: Actually, it’s kind of mesmerizing. (O_O)

You can see the patent here: It has an interesting intro, then it gets deeper and deeper into the physics. Ummm, let’s just take history’s word that it worked back then. =)

And lastly, here’s a video of me playing a user-created game of the same name. NO idea if it actually simulates the game, but it was a quick, fun 30-second shooter:

What the Frak Are You?

Level One: Every time you start a new game, you usually start at level one. Unless you’re playing Pokémon where the starter is Level 5 or getting a new character in a JRPG, who have stats which are based on the stats of your party at the time. Anyway,

Fanboy: 1. “A passionate fan of various elements of geek culture (e.g. sci-fi, comics, Star Wars, video games, anime, hobbits, Magic: the Gathering, etc.), but who lets his passion override social graces.” (
2. “A male who is highly devoted to and biased towards a single subject or hobby within a given field…The term originated in comic book circles, to describe someone who was socially insecure and used comics as a shield from interaction, hence the disparaging connotations. Fanboys are often experts on minor details regarding their hobbies, such as continuity in fictional universes, and they take these details extremely seriously” (

Basically, I’m a beginner when it comes to geek culture. I don’t have the money to invest in it, and I don’t have the time to memorize details to know that a mistake occurred in volume 100 because of a small art detail in volume 62. But that’s not to say I love the atmosphere that geek culture creates. What’s great about being level 1 is that you have the chance to reach level 99. Or level 255. Or 1337 status!

So yes, I have watched a bunch of anime, read a bunch of manga, played a bunch of video games, watched a bunch of movies, laughed at a bunch of parodies on Youtube, and cosplayed once. I’m not socially inept though! I won’t annoy the hell out of you with details of why Batman triumphs Superman. I want to use this Web site to comment and give news on stuff I find interesting. If you can forgive the author’s newb status or if you’re someone like me, then grab your basic dagger and shield and come along for the ride! I will do my best to entertain and educate. Enjoy!
